The Lindenhof Park has been the scene of many historic events. In the fourth century, a Roman fort stood at the Lindenhof. Its purpose was to protect the Roman garrison and the population from attacks by Alemanni. In the ninth century, Charlemagne's grandson built a palace here, a royal residence.
Until the beginning of the modern era, the square served as a gathering place for the people of Zurich. Thus, in 1798, it is the Lindenhof was sworn in as the Swiss Confederation.
Today, the Lindenhof Park is an oasis of peace and quiet in the middle of the city, and is a particular haunt for chess enthusiasts.
